Research Statement

The primary goals of my research are to understand the dynamics and structure of the earth's interior and to use this knowledge for the benefit of the society. Specifically, I use seismic waves generated by earthquakes and man-made sources to image the earth from the crust to the deep mantle. Current and potential applications include the exploration of natural resources and assessment of earthquake hazards. I deploy ocean-bottom seismometers and install seismic stations in places like Iceland and Tibet to study a particular area or problem in detail. In order to extract more and accurate information about the earth from seismic records, I use supercomputers to simulate wave propagation in complex three-dimensional and heterogeneous media. I often take an interdisciplinary approach to address important geological problems, incorporating seismic results with constraints from geodynamics, geochemistry, and high-pressure mineral physics. I also collaborate with engineers to develop new seismic and geodetic sensors to improve earthquake and tsunami monitoring.
