Research Statement

My research interests involve using geophysical techniques to constrain tectonic regimes of geologically diverse regions throughout the world. I hope to better characterize surface feature and tectonic evolution through knowledge obtained using numerical methods. Specifically, I have used both 1D and 3D seismic velocity models of the Earth, with multiple source inversion methods, to determine accurate, well-constrained, and robust earthquake source faulting parameters for a new earthquake catalog being created for the Middle East region. This new earthquake catalog, complete in September 2009, will be used to iteratively update 3D wave speed models for the Middle East region. Accurate 3D wave speed models are necessary for the characterization of sources, either natural or explosively generated. The future of this project will lead to better nuclear explosion monitoring within the Middle East, in addition to having geological implications, such as the improvement of earthquake locations and more accurate characterization of faults and regional tectonic evolution.
